I just visited the Franklin Fountain the last weekend of 2006 w/my family and my sister and her family. We were very happy w/it- the homemade ice cream is excellent (the "hot" chocolate flavored w/two kinds of peppers was very intense and well worth trying). I got a huge slice of chocolate cake w/a scoop of cinnamon ice cream (the cinnamon was surprisingly light tasting, but that may have been after I sampled the hot chocolate). The folks running the store were very pleasant, and friendly to our kids. The feel of the store makes the experience unique. Absolutely should be anybody's short list (along w/Shane's Candies on the same block of Market) when visiting Old City.

I am *obsessed* with Franklin Fountain! We randomly stopped in over the summer to check it out (shortly before the best-of-2006 award), and ever since it has been a bi-weekly habit. At first i was just interested in the ice cream, but now i am equally as addicted to the floats (have you tried a rose-flavored one yet?)

Also, damn, those banana splits are big for one person.

Great blog; I always love to locate unique Philly bloggers!

[...] Messy and Picky both give five stars to Franklin Fountain on Market Street between Front and Second, calling the old school soda fountain “a delicious timewarp.” The ice cream sandwich built from two scoops of ice cream and surrounded by a freshly made waffle was called delectible.
