I was surprised to learn later that they kill them there - there was NO SMELL AT ALL! I grew up near a town that had a slaughterhouse and you could smell that one from 4 blocks away! We have a small farm and recently joined the farm market scene. Smuckers has done some of our processing and we are very happy with their work. All cuts are excellent and packaging is very nice. I am also pleased with the way the animals are handled. Even though we raise our animals for meat I still get attached to them and want them treated as best as possible.
